The American manufacturing sector is likely to face more significant challenges in the next five years than at any other time since WWII. Low-price international competitors, the consumer credit crunch and general slowdown of the US economy all pose threats to manufacturers across the nation. Nowhere, however, are those threats as immediate as in Los Angeles County. The American West Coast is ground zero for Asian importers and customers in Southern Californian are among the most fickle in the nation; with skyrocketing gasoline prices and an inflated real estate market they cannot afford not to be. There will, however, be many opportunities for agile businesses to grow and succeed in spite of the turbulent economic environment. Nimble, well-run manufacturers, if they orient themselves in the correct strategic direction, should find 2008 to be a year of incredible opportunity.
